SUP Therapy: A Mindful Paddleboarding Experience

De-stress and reduce anxiety on the water by learning to integrate mindfulness and meditation with SUP with our mindful paddle group sessions on the beautiful River Avon with Wittering SUP; an ASI accredited SUP school.

One of the most addictive elements of SUP is that it is naturally a very mindful, stress-busting experience. Gentle rhythmic movement, the sound of the water flowing by, surrounded by trees and abundant wildlife, far from roads, towns and screens; it could not be a better environment in which to learn and develop your mindfulness and meditative skills. Take the mental wellness power of SUP to the next level in our guided mindful paddle experience.

Stand up For Nature
For every ticket sold (including gift vouchers), not only will we plant a much needed tree in a deserving reforestation project, but we will also donate £2 towards our local Kemerton Conservation Trust; the custodians of our beautiful local landscape and it's wildlife. Together we will stand up for nature.

This activity is perfect for:
Paddlers with some paddleboarding experience (so that mindful paddlers can fully benefit from the mindfulness aspect of the experience) looking to build their daily stress and anxiety reduction toolbox with mindful meditation skills that will amplify the mental wellness power of SUP both on and off the water.

Session objective:
To give paddlers a means to incorporate mindful practices into their own SUP sessions and explore ways to bring a mindful presence to all aspects of stand up paddling safely to bring them closer to nature, reduce stress and anxiety and get more out of an already mindful experience.

Activity duration: approximately 2.5hrs.
Trip location: Arden Sailing Club to Nafford Lock via Eckington Bridge
Ages 16+ (under 18s with a guardian).
Maximum group size of 5.
All participants must be able to swim 50m.
Cost: £60 per person

What you'll be doing in your mindful paddle group session:
  • Meet, greet and getting kitted up
  • An ASI paddle technique and safety refresher
  • A beginner's introduction to mindfulness and meditation
  • Learn how to incorporate mindful practices into paddling such as awareness of breathing and the movement of the paddle stroke, awareness of our surroundings, our sense of presence on the board from your feet to the paddle handle, covering movements with our attention and finding out why the river is much like the flow of thoughts in our minds
  • Short pre-paddle meditation - body scan and breath covering.
  • Getting on the water (a quick skill assessment and getting going)
  • Mindful paddle along the river discussing tips, engaging in the mindful practices we've learned and practicing how to become completely present on a SUP session (or anywhere in life)
  • Returning to base
  • Finishing with the intention to take a mindful approach to the rest of the day

All our sessions will be socially distanced, hygienic and will adhere to government guidelines and advice from British Canoeing, the ASI and the Avon Navigation Trust as these evolve over time as well as meeting our own internal COVID19 risk assessment standards. We are ASI COVID19 Secure Audited.
2On-site facilities
Wittering SUP HQ is based at Arden Sailing Club where we have toilets, changing rooms, light refreshments, picnic tables and secure parking onsite.
3What is included?
Our sessions include all the gear you need to get on the water, we’ll kit you out with an adjustable paddle (we’ll adjust this to your height when you arrive). You’ll be learning on a beautiful 10’6” Sandbanks SUP Style Art Board. Safety leash on every board and buoyancy aids if required.
4What should you wear?
We just ask that you dress for the weather; board shorts and tee shirts are a favourite in the Summer, or perhaps your yoga or gym outfit. Quick-drying and sun-safe are a good choice (don't forget your suncream on a warm day). During the cooler months you may want to wear a few layers or perhaps a hoody; feel free to bring your own wetsuit. NOTE: Due to COVID restrictions we can't provide you with wetsuits. On my feet I prefer a physical connection with my board so I tend to go barefoot, but any water-shoe is fine or even a pair of old trainers that you don’t mind getting wet. A towel and a change of clothes are a good idea, just in case ;)

New skills outside of our comfort zone can always seem a little daunting, but we are always SO much more capable than we think we are. We are passionate about making sure everybody feels safe, confident and happy with their experience; our approach is gentle, supportive and compassionate and you have nothing to worry about; we’ll look after you :)
6Refund & Cancellation Policy
We have to plan ahead and session spaces are limited so we offer a full refund if you notify us of your cancellation 2 weeks before your session or a 50% refund a week before your booked session (gift voucher sessions are non-refundable). We only operate under the safest conditions, as such if the weather (wind), or water (flow/flood) conditions are not appropriate for beginner’s lessons we will notify you and arrange a more suitable date for your experience.

For anyone struggling with anxiety during these strange times we're now living in, I can also highly recommend Wittering SUP. Mindfulness isn't something that comes naturally to me, it's definitely a work in progress, but after paddling I felt better than I have done in a long time. That horrible anxious feeling had gone and I honestly felt like a weight had been lifted
