The Ultimate River Adventure - No Experience Required.

Most of our Safari guests have never stood on a board before. We have designed this award winning, 2.5-hour journey to be the most supportive, patient introduction to paddleboarding in the UK.

More than a lesson. A river reset. Discover the beauty of the River Avon with a 2.5-hour immersive experience. Whether you are a brave beginner or a seasoned paddler, our Safari combines expert coaching with the restorative power of the river’s quietest reaches.

Spring/Summer 2026 Update: Nature Awakes

As the river springs to life, the landscape transforms. Glide past lush greenery and blooming river lilies as dragonflies dance across the surface. This is a season of abundance, look for the neon flash of a kingfisher, the soaring majesty of red kites, or even the playful antics of otters.

This isn’t just an adventure; it’s a mindful transition. By matching the calm rhythm of the water, you allow your mind to unwind, reconnect, and recharge in a safe, supportive environment.

What Makes Our SUP Safari Special?

  • Efficient Technique: Gain power and stability while protecting yourself from injury with professional coaching.

  • Master Paddle Safety: Understand your environment and the gear that keeps you safe.

  • The "Slow" Approach: We don't rush the distance. We focus on "soft fascination", allowing the brain to naturally recharge by focusing on nature's gentle patterns.

  • Exclusive Rewards: Enjoy 10% off hot drinks, cakes, and delicious lunches from Revill’s Farm Shop, right next door.

No Experience? No Problem.

The SUP Safari is our most popular choice for first-timers and brave beginners. While it is a longer journey, the extra time isn't about "hard work", it’s about having the luxury of time to settle, find your balance, and actually relax into the skill.

  • First-Timers: The ideal introduction. More time to learn means more time to feel successful.

  • Nervous Adventurers: Our patient, step-by-step approach is designed specifically for those worried about balance.

  • Wildlife Enthusiasts: A front-row seat to Worcestershire’s most secluded nature.

What You’ll Be Doing:

We structure the journey to help your body stop bracing and start experiencing.

  • The Grounding Start A warm welcome and kit-up at the Sailing Club. We start on the grass, getting you comfortable with the board and equipment before we even touch the water.

  • Building the Safety Net We master self-rescue and safety fundamentals first. Knowing you are safe allows your nervous system to relax, making the transition from kneeling to standing feel steady and natural.

  • The Downstream Journey We paddle through the peaceful beauty of the River Avon. This longer duration allows you to settle into the "flow" of the water and spot the wildlife at a relaxed, unhurried pace.

  • Expert Coaching in Motion Throughout the journey, we offer continuous, patient guidance to help you refine your skills at a pace that feels right for you.

  • Debrief & Celebrate A safe exit from the water followed by a relaxed debrief. You’ll leave the river feeling taller, calmer, and more confident.

Additional Information

1Being YOU @ Wittering SUP
You are welcome here. Our aim is to ensure a safe and accessible way for every being to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of stand-up paddleboarding regardless of race, religion, size, gender, sexual orientation or disability. If you feel that you or a loved one’s neurodiversity or disability might impact your SUP adventure, please talk to us so that we can curate a plan and a safe space for you.
2COVID19 Secure Audited
All our sessions will be socially distanced, hygienic and will adhere to government guidelines and advice from British Canoeing, the ASI and the Avon Navigation Trust as these evolve over time as well as meeting our own internal COVID19 risk assessment standards. We are ASI COVID19 Secure Audited.
3On-site facilities
Wittering SUP HQ is based at Arden Sailing Club where we have toilets, changing rooms, light refreshments, picnic tables and secure parking onsite.
4What is included?
Our sessions include all the gear you need to get on the water, we’ll kit you out with an adjustable paddle (we’ll adjust this to your height when you arrive). You’ll be learning on a beautiful 10’6” Sandbanks SUP Style Art Board. Safety leash on every board and buoyancy aids if required.
5What should you wear?
We just ask that you dress for the weather; board shorts and tee shirts are a favourite in the Summer, or perhaps your yoga or gym outfit. Quick-drying and sun-safe are a good choice (don't forget your suncream on a warm day). During the cooler months you may want to wear a few layers or perhaps a hoody; feel free to bring your own wetsuit. NOTE: Due to COVID restrictions we can't provide you with wetsuits. On my feet I prefer a physical connection with my board so I tend to go barefoot, but any water-shoe is fine or even a pair of old trainers that you don’t mind getting wet. A towel and a change of clothes are a good idea, just in case ;)
6Feeling a little unsure?
New skills outside of our comfort zone can always seem a little daunting, but we are always SO much more capable than we think we are. We are passionate about making sure everybody feels safe, confident and happy with their experience; our approach is gentle, supportive and compassionate and you have nothing to worry about; we’ll look after you :)
7Refund & Cancellation Policy
We have to plan ahead and session spaces are limited so we offer a full refund if you notify us of your cancellation 2 weeks before your session or a 50% refund a week before your booked session (gift voucher sessions are non-refundable). We only operate under the safest conditions, as such if the weather (wind), or water (flow/flood) conditions are not appropriate for beginner’s lessons we will notify you and arrange a more suitable date for your experience.
8Gift vouchers / Pre-bought tickets
To redeem an experience gift voucher with us, simply select a date to book your session and at the checkout click the 'Enter promo code' link at the top and enter your unique, 5 digit voucher code (found at the bottom of your voucher email or card) and a 100% discount will be applied to your purchase :)

Award-winning experience  ·  Visit Worcestershire  ·  The most beautiful stretch of the Avon you will find

SUP River Safari · River Avon · Defford to The Swan's Neck

2.5 hours on the Avon.
Guided from first stroke to last.

The SUP Safari is a 2.5-hour guided paddle along one of the most secluded stretches of the River Avon in Worcestershire. You launch from Arden Sailing Club at Defford, glide under Eckington Bridge, and make your way to The Swan's Neck near Birlingham. A quiet bend where the river opens up and the world goes still.

This is not a race. It is not a workout. The Safari is designed around the idea that time on moving water does something measurable to the mind. We call it soft fascination: the effortless attention the brain gives to nature, which allows it to recover from the kind of directed focus that work depletes. The river does most of the work.

Beginners are completely welcome. The extra time on the water is about settling, finding your balance, and arriving somewhere you did not expect to reach. Most people are standing within fifteen minutes and have stopped thinking about it shortly after.

Who this is for

Whatever brought you
to the river today

Complete beginners
Never stood on a board
The Safari is our most popular choice for first-timers. The extra time on the water is the point: you have the space to settle in, find your balance, and relax into the skill before you have gone anywhere. Most people are standing within fifteen minutes and forget to be nervous not long after that.
Post-lesson paddlers
Had a lesson, want more
The Learn to SUP session gets you standing. The Safari is where you start to feel at home on the water. A longer paddle, a proper route, wildlife along the way, and time to consolidate everything you learned in the first session. This is where it stops feeling like a lesson and starts feeling like paddleboarding.
Experienced paddlers
Guided, and probably improved
If you can already paddle, the Safari gives you access to a stretch of the Avon most people never find. James knows every bend, every bird, and the best place to stop. Most experienced paddlers also leave with something they did not arrive with: a technique correction, a more efficient stroke, a habit they did not know they had. The coaching is there throughout if you want it.

If you have never paddled before

Most people are nervous
before they get on the board.

Being nervous is completely normal. Most people are. What you will find on the water is that the River Avon is calm and wide, the boards are stable, and within a few minutes the thinking tends to stop and the doing takes over.

The Safari gives you 2.5 hours to find your feet. There is no pressure to keep up. You go at your own pace. James coaches you throughout the Safari, on the water, from first stroke to last.

If you have a disability, neurodiversity, or anything that might affect how the session works for you, get in touch before you book. We always find a way to make it work.

We go at your pace, not anyone else's
James and Alex are known for patience. There is no rush, no pressure to keep up, and no moment where you will feel left behind. The 2.5 hours is long enough for almost everyone to find their feet and feel settled on the water.
If you go in, you will know exactly what to do
Self-rescue is covered before anyone gets on the water. You will understand what happens, how to get back on the board, and what the body does when it hits cold water. We cover the fear before you need to deal with the fact.
Solo bookings are always welcome
You do not need a group. Many of the best Safaris have been solo. Turn up on your own and spend 2.5 hours on a river most people never find.
The route

What the 2.5 hours
actually looks like

01
Launch from Defford
Everything on the bank first: kit, technique, safety, and any questions you have. The river is calm at the launch point and the water is clear. We go at your pace from the first stroke.
02
Under Eckington Bridge
One of the most beautiful moments of the Safari. The medieval stone bridge frames the river perfectly. Kingfishers nest nearby. Keep your eyes on the water's edge.
03
The Swan's Neck
A quiet bend near Birlingham where we stop. Lie back on your board. Listen to the reeds. The cuckoos call from the willows. The world goes still. This is the part people talk about afterwards.
04
Back with the current
The return paddle is gentler. The current does most of the work. A chance to consolidate, practise, and take in the river from the other direction. You arrive back different to how you left.
The moment people talk about

The Swan's Neck,
near Birlingham

About halfway through the Safari, the river bends into a quiet reach known as The Swan's Neck. We stop here. There is no agenda.

Most people lie back on their boards and float. The reeds susurrate around you. Cuckoos call from the willows. The only sound is the river. It is the kind of silence that takes a few minutes to arrive properly, and then stays.

This is the reason the Safari exists. The return paddle back with the current tends to feel different to the journey out: quieter, slower, easier. Most people are not in a rush to get back.

What makes this different

A guided paddle.
Properly led from start to finish.

Expert coaching throughout
James is an ASI Technical Coach, one of a small number in the UK, and Wittering SUP is an ASI-accredited school. Whether you are a beginner finding your feet or an experienced paddler refining your stroke, the coaching runs throughout the Safari. Not delivered at the bank and then left to you on the water.
The softest introduction to nature
The route from Defford to The Swan's Neck is one of the most secluded stretches of the Avon. Red kites overhead, kingfishers at the water's edge, river lilies in summer, the occasional otter. A front-row seat to Worcestershire's quietest corner.
Blue health, actively practised
James is a certified Blue Health Facilitator. The Safari is designed around what the science says about what water does to the mind. The stops, the pace, the route: all of it is intentional.
The return is with the current
The paddle out is the journey. The paddle back is the reward. You float rather than fight. Most groups slow down even more on the return. Nobody is checking the time.

I had never paddled before. The Safari was the perfect introduction. So much more time to settle in than a standard lesson. By the time we reached the bridge I had completely forgotten to be nervous.

Loved our SUP Safari down the River Avon. The scenery was great, we saw loads of dragonflies and plenty of fish. Alex and James helped us correct our paddle stroke so we were actually going in the right direction. We will be back.

James and Alex Wittering
ASI Technical Coach · MBCT Teacher · Blue Health Facilitator
SUP Yoga Instructor · Open Water Swimming Coach

James has guided this stretch of the River Avon since 2019. He knows where the kingfishers nest, which bend the otters favour, and the exact moment at The Swan's Neck when the group goes quiet for the right reasons.

As an ASI Technical Coach and certified Blue Health Facilitator, the Safari is both a guided wildlife experience and a quietly therapeutic one. James weaves nervous system awareness and blue health practice into the journey without making a performance of it. Most people notice the effect before they have named what it is.

Alex joins as a second instructor on busier sessions, bringing her background in yoga, SUP yoga, and open water swimming to the water.

The science behind the stillness

The river is doing something
the whole time you are on it.

Blue health is the science of what proximity to water does to the mind. Lower cortisol. Restored attention. Improved mood. These are measurable effects, consistently replicated across populations.

The Safari route is chosen and paced with this in mind. The stops, the silences, the moment at The Swan's Neck: none of it is accidental. James is a certified Blue Health Facilitator and designs the experience around what the research says restores attention most effectively.

You do not need to know any of this for it to work. But understanding it tends to change how you experience the river afterwards, and how often you come back.

What the research says about time near water
Cortisol
Water proximity consistently associated with lower stress hormone levels across multiple peer-reviewed studies.
Attention
Blue environments produce soft fascination: effortless, restorative attention that allows the directed focus of work to recover.
Mood
Consistent improvements in wellbeing and mood following time in blue and green environments. The Avon is doing this throughout.
