Off the screens. On the river. Kid’s SUP Club 2026

Kids SUP Club Worcestershire | Paddleboarding for Children | Wittering SUP

Off the screens.
On the river.

Kids SUP Club is a weekly paddleboarding session on the River Avon at Defford, for children aged 8 to 14. Every session is led by James and Alex, who between them have been teaching children on this stretch of the Avon for years. Small groups, qualified instructors, calm water, and an afternoon that most children talk about on the way home.

Paddleboarding on a river is the kind of activity that does something to children that screens and sports halls do not. The water demands full presence. There is no room to be anywhere else. The wildlife, the movement, the physical problem-solving of staying upright: it pulls children into the moment in a way that is rare and, for many of them, new.

The science behind this is what James teaches adults in his Blue Health programmes. Children do not need to know any of that. They just need an afternoon on the Avon, and the connection tends to take care of itself.

Reviews

The best-reviewed paddleboard school
in the Midlands.

These reviews mean more to us than we can easily say. We read them on the hard days, and they remind us why we do this.

"Excellent instruction. Had a brilliant time away from screens. Highly recommend Alex and James."

Why the river matters

A relationship with water
that lasts a lifetime.

Research into Blue Health, the science of what proximity to water does to the mind, is consistent on one thing: the earlier the connection is made, the deeper it tends to run. Children who spend regular time on or near natural water develop a relationship with the outdoors that follows them into adulthood.

The effect is not subtle. Twenty minutes near moving water is enough to lower cortisol and shift attention from the reactive, screen-driven state most children spend their days in, into something slower and more restored. On the river, they are not consuming. They are noticing. That is a different kind of experience from almost everything else in a child's week.

The water demands full presence. There is no room to be anywhere else.

James has spent years developing Blue Health programmes for adults. The Kids SUP Club is where those same principles meet a Tuesday afternoon and a group of children who just need to be somewhere that is not a screen.

Attention restoration
Natural water environments restore the directed attention that school and screens deplete. Children recover their focus by being somewhere that requires effortless, wide attention rather than narrow, sustained effort.
Physical confidence
Paddleboarding builds balance, core strength, and proprioception. The challenge of staying upright on moving water is physical problem-solving that most children find absorbing rather than effortful.
Social confidence
Small groups, shared challenge, equal footing. The river levels things. Children who are quiet in a classroom often discover a different version of themselves on the water.
Nature connection
Kingfishers, herons, otters, dragonflies, reed beds. The River Avon at Defford is alive. Most children have never been this close to a working ecosystem. The curiosity that gets sparked tends to outlast the session.

What to expect

What the 90 minutes
actually looks like.

01
Arrive and kit up
Children arrive at Arden Sailing Club and get fitted for boards, paddles, and safety kit. Everything is explained before anyone goes near the water. Parents are welcome to stay and watch from the bank.
02
Safety and skills on the bank
James and Alex cover everything on dry land first: how to get on and off the board, what happens if you fall in, and how to get back on. By the time children step onto the water, nothing feels unfamiliar. Self-rescue is covered and practised.
03
On the water
Kneeling first, then standing when each child is ready. James and Alex are on the water throughout, offering coaching, encouragement, and a close eye on the group. Most children are up within fifteen minutes. Some take longer. Both are fine.
04
Explore and play
Once the group is settled, the session opens up. Paddling along the river, spotting wildlife, learning to turn, playing games on the boards, and for the braver ones, practising falling in and getting back on. The river tends to take care of the rest.
05
Building week on week
Children who attend regularly develop quickly. Technique, confidence, and river knowledge all build across the sessions. By the end of the summer, regular attendees are paddling independently and could go out on a guided session with an adult.
06
Back on the bank
A debrief, kit returned, and time for questions. The farm shop next door has cold drinks and snacks. Most children come back the following Tuesday without needing to be asked.
For parents

What parents usually
want to know.

Safety
Your child is in qualified hands throughout
James is an ASI Technical Coach, one of a small number in the UK, and Wittering SUP is an ASI-accredited school. Alex is a qualified SUP instructor and open water swimming coach. Both are experienced in working with children across a wide range of ages and abilities. An instructor is on the water with the group at all times. The group is never left unsupervised.
Confidence
Especially good for children who need a confidence boost
The river is an equaliser. Children who are quiet or anxious on land often find something different on the water. The challenge is physical and immediate, the progress is visible, and James and Alex are known for the patience and individual attention they bring to every child in the group. If your child has specific needs, tell us when you book and we will make sure the session works for them.
Staying
Parents are welcome to watch from the bank
Arden Sailing Club has a good bank-side area where parents can watch the session. The sailing club also has a picnic area, free parking, and toilets on site. Revill's Farm Shop is next door if you want to make an afternoon of it.
Getting wet
They will almost certainly fall in. That is the point.
Self-rescue is covered before anyone gets on the water, so falling in is a skill rather than a surprise. Children quickly discover it is the best part. Bring a towel and a dry set of clothes. Wetsuits are available if children want them, though in summer most prefer to go without.

My 12 year old daughter and I had the most fantastic session learning the right way to SUP. We were both new to it and a little nervous but James and Alex soon put our nerves to bed. Really pleased with the patience and support they gave us both whilst making the whole experience fun.

A family lesson with my son (11 years). James and Alex made everyone feel welcome and at ease. Before long everyone was up and paddling. Once confident they introduced games and the kids absolutely loved it.
