Most people are standing
within fifteen minutes.

Most people arrive at the car park with some version of the same question: am I going to be the one it does not work for? The answer, in thousands of sessions on this stretch of the Avon, has almost always been no. Around 98 percent of people are standing within the first fifteen minutes. For everyone else, we keep going until we get there.

The first thing most people notice when they arrive is the river itself. The quiet, the green, the way the water moves. That tends to settle things before we have even started the briefing. We chose this stretch of the Avon at Defford specifically because it is calm, private, and worth a morning of anyone's time.

Complete beginner or self-taught paddler who has been muddling along on your own, you will leave this session better than you arrived. More confident, more efficient, and with at least one technique you did not have when you showed up.

Reviews

The best-reviewed paddleboard school
in Worcestershire.

These reviews mean more to us than we can easily say. We read them on the hard days, and they remind us why we do this.

Who this is for

Whatever your starting point,
you will leave better than you arrived.

Complete beginners
Never stood on a board
You are in exactly the right place. We go at your pace, address everything that might be worrying you before you get near the water, and stay alongside you throughout. Within fifteen minutes, most people are up. We work with everyone until they get there, at their own pace.
Improvers and returners
Had a lesson before, or self-taught
If you have been on a board before, or picked it up on your own, a session with James and Alex will make you faster, more balanced, and safer. There is always something to refine: technique, efficiency, confidence on the water. We have not had a session yet where someone did not take something new away, regardless of how long they have been paddling.
On holiday, or looking for something to do this week

A proper activity
for the whole family.

A Learn to SUP session is one of the best things you can do together on a summer morning or half-term afternoon. It takes 1.5 hours, everybody goes at their own pace, and most people end up paddling along a stretch of the Avon that feels completely removed from wherever they started the day.

Children aged 10 and over are welcome. Under 18s need an adult on the water with them, which most families take as the invitation it is. Sessions are capped at six people so there is always proper time and attention for everyone.

After the session, Revill's Farm Shop is right next door and paddlers get 10% off. Most families stay for lunch. The sailing club has toilets, changing rooms, and free parking on site.

During the half term break my two children took part in a SUP lesson which they absolutely loved. I was amazed at how much progress they made in one lesson and that was 100% down to the clear instructions and excellent teaching.

Myself and my two sons had never SUP'd before but Alex guided us perfectly, each with our own personal challenges. Thanks for helping build a fantastic memory for us this weekend.

Our three-generational family group aged from 12 to 81 had a great time with James and Alex. Very quickly everyone was standing confidently on their boards. Everyone came off the water with big smiles.

The session

What the 1.5 hours
actually looks like

01
Arrive and breathe
The river tends to do some of the work before we have said anything. There is a proper welcome, time to get your bearings, and space to mention anything you are worried about. We address it before we do anything else. Falling in, water quality, comfort zones, whatever it might be.
02
Everything on the bank first
Your board, your paddle, your technique, and everything you might be wondering about falling in. We cover it all on dry land. By the time you step near the water you will know your equipment, understand what happens if you go in, and have a plan for it.
03
On the water at your pace
Kneeling first, standing when your body is ready. We teach the correct stroke, the efficient stance, and stay right alongside you. Some people are up in five minutes. Some take fifteen. Both are fine.
04
Then you paddle
A gentle drift along one of the most peaceful stretches of the Avon. Kingfishers, reed beds, open sky. The point where most people stop thinking about the board and start thinking about nothing at all.
05
Build on it
Turning, stopping, recovering from a wobble. Towards the end of the session we also invite you to practise self-rescue on the water: what to do if you go in, and how to get back on. It is always optional, always supported. Most people find it is the moment their remaining nerves leave for good.
06
Celebrate on the bank
A proper debrief. Where you started, where you got to, what to try next. High fives are optional. They are frequently unavoidable.

Two paddlers arms raised in joy on the River Avon
The thing most people are thinking

Worried about
falling in?

Almost everyone arrives with something they are quietly worried about. Falling in is the most common. For others it is water quality, being out of their comfort zone, or not wanting to hold the group back. Whatever it is, we invite you to name it when you arrive and we address it before anyone goes near the water.

The Avon at Defford is around seventeen feet deep where we paddle. That might sound alarming until you realise what it means: clear water, no muddy bottom, no reeds around your ankles. Most people find the depth reassuring once we explain it. In summer the water reaches 17 to 24 degrees. All kit is sorted on arrival and we talk through what you will need on the day.

Everything on this course is invitational. You will never be asked to do anything you are not comfortable with. We encourage self-rescue practice because it builds confidence, but it is always your choice. The goal is that you leave feeling capable and safe to paddle independently.

ASI accredited instructors
We are a fully accredited Academy of Surfing Instructors school. James is also an ASI Technical Coach, one of a small number in the UK. You are in qualified hands throughout.
Always alongside you
An instructor is with the group on the water throughout. Maximum six paddlers means nobody is left to fend for themselves.
All safety kit included
Quick release waist belts, wetsuits if wanted, and all the kit you need. We go through everything before you get on the water.
Self-rescue taught on the water
We cover what to do if you go in, including a moment about what the body does when it starts to feel unsafe, and how to bring it back. Most people find this is the moment the nerves actually leave.

ASI Technical Coach · MBCT Teacher · Blue Health Facilitator
SUP Yoga Instructor · Open Water Swimming Coach

James and Alex have been teaching paddleboarding on the River Avon since 2019. Between them they bring a range of qualifications you would not normally find in a small river school: James is an ASI Technical Coach, a qualified MBCT teacher, and a certified Blue Health Facilitator. Alex is a yoga and SUP yoga instructor, an open water swimming coach, and a SUP instructor.

In practice, that means even in a beginner session you are getting coaching informed by movement science, nervous system awareness, and years of watching exactly where people find it hard and what actually helps. Most people leave having learned more than they expected in ninety minutes.

Wittering SUP is award-winning and accredited, with more five-star reviews than any other paddleboard school in Worcestershire.

Something else worth knowing

The river is doing
something while you are on it.

James is a certified Blue Health Facilitator and MBCT teacher. Blue health is the science of what proximity to water does to the mind: lower cortisol, restored attention, improved mood. The Avon at Defford is doing all of this passively throughout your session, before you have even noticed.

James weaves nervous system awareness into every session, including the moments when the body starts to feel uncertain on the water. Understanding what is happening and knowing what to do about it changes the experience significantly.

Every age, body and ability

Every age, body
and ability.

If you or someone in your group has a disability, neurodiversity, or anything that might affect how the session works for you, tell us when you book. We have adapted sessions for wheelchair users, people with cerebral palsy, neurodivergent adults and children, and plenty of people who just needed things to go a bit slower.

We always find a way to make it work. If you are not sure whether something is a barrier, email or call and we will tell you honestly.

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult on the water. Everyone needs to be able to swim 50 metres. Beyond that, come and talk to us.

2On-site facilities
Wittering SUP HQ is based at Arden Sailing Club where we have toilets, changing rooms, hot showers, light refreshments, picnic tables and secure parking onsite.
3What is included?
Our sessions include all the gear you need to get on the water, we’ll kit you out with an adjustable paddle (we’ll adjust this to your height when you arrive). You’ll be learning on a beautiful 10’6” Sandbanks SUP Style Art Board. QR belt on every board, buoyancy aids and wetsuits if required.
4What should you wear?
We just ask that you dress for the weather; board shorts and tee shirts are a favourite in the Summer, or perhaps your yoga or gym outfit. Quick-drying and sun-safe are a good choice (don't forget your suncream on a warm day). During the cooler months you may want to wear a few layers or perhaps a hoody; feel free to bring your own wetsuit. We have a few wetsuits and thermal rash vests you are welcome to borrow :) On my feet I prefer a physical connection with my board so I tend to go barefoot, but any water-shoe is fine or even a pair of old trainers that you don’t mind getting wet. A towel and a change of clothes are a good idea, just in case ;)

We are passionate about making sure everybody feels safe, confident and happy with their experience; our approach is gentle, supportive and compassionate and you have nothing to worry about; we’ll look after you :)
