What you'll need
  • To have completed our Learn to SUP or SUP safari (or similar)
  • To be able to go from kneeling to standing, standing to kneeling, have awareness of the 5 phases of the paddle stroke (entry, catch, power, exit, recovery), to be able to perform self recovery, to be able to paddle 10k (Absolutely not looking for perfection here, we'll be there to help and guide you all the way and you'll be in safe hands at all times).
  • The water temp is currently very acceptable but you may want to bring a wetsuit (or rashie/leggings) as we will encourage you to take a dip and challenge yourself with some exercises. (Nothing is compulsory of course, but we will encourage you to get as much learning experience as possible so you have the tools in your locker for those independent adventures)
  • We’ll provide all your standard SUP and safety gear as usual
What you'll learn
  • Improve your SUP paddle technique with an ASI Technical Coach
  • Generate more power for less effort and minimise injury risk on longer trips
  • Learn how to rescue or assist a fellow paddler in various scenarios
  • Learn about essential gear; what to take and what to leave behind .
  • Understand the importance of weather, wind and water conditions in trip planning
  • Learn about water access rights, craft licencing and water quality
  • Learn the safe procedures to portage across locks and navigate rivers
  • Everything you need to confidently plan your own flat water SUP adventures
What you'll be doing
  • Arrivals, coffees, waivers, high fives and making sure everyone is kitted out appropriately
  • We kit you out with your paddle, board and safety gear
  • An on-land briefing to run over the session plan and revisit some basic skills
  • We’ll set off upriver, enjoying the wildlife, working on our paddle technique and generally having a lovely time. Along the way, we’ll share some top trip planning tips and take time to discuss everybody’s individual SUP goals.
  • There will be a few teaching points when we reach the sluice and lock at Nafford and head off down the subsidiary that leads to the weir. Not only is this a fun little diversion it also gives us the opportunity to practice a safe portage across the weir to the other side.
  • After a brief exploration of the sunken narrowboat we’ll head through the gap and back out onto the river before deer spotting on our way to our mid-point, a beautiful, private space, just for us.
  • We’ll stop for a well earned rest, a hot (or ice cold) drink and a slice of cake (or brownie) or two under a willow tree before we discuss kit, planning resources and introduce the SUP rescue techniques and then learn the art of towing via a towing race! This is great fun and a very useful skill for your SUP safety skills locker.
  • Time to get back on our boards and explore the art of wild SUP yoga before going with the flow via the portage point at the weir and back to base for pivot turn and board flip practice time! Ending with a hot shower, a debrief and a warming mug of Alex's famous ginger and lemon tea before you are set free to go off and confidently plan your own independent SUP adventures!

I attended a skills session with Alex and James yesterday and had a brilliant time. The session was planned for 09.30 to 14.30 but actually finished at 16.00 due to everyone having such a lovely time. Alex and James did not rush anyone and were totally responsive to individual needs. The session included, theory, turning and rescue skills, improving individual techniques and loads and loads of fun. Plenty of time on the river with drink and biscuits provided. I certainly have no hesitation in recommending Wittering SUP to others. I have total faith in Alex and James. My wife will be booking a 1 to 1 session in the near future. Many thanks Steve

Booked as a surprise for my 40th Birthday. Was meant to go on Saturday but the wind was too strong. Alex was amazing and managed to reschedule us for another day before we went home. Was soo much fun…. Including the cold water and jelly legs 🤣 Alex and James were so patient and a lot of fun to learn from. Thank you and can’t recommend this company enough.

Had the most amazing first ever introduction to paddle boarding, I love yoga and had the opportunity to try this out in a SUPyoga session. I felt nervous at first but Alex helped me feel relaxed on the board with great instruction and her yoga teaching was perfect on the water too. Thank you, I’ll be back!

What a brilliant family experience. James and Alex took their time to coach us and we felt safe but had fun at the same time. By far the best part of our holiday.

We are two 70 year olds who were given paddle boarding lessons as a birthday treat . We were inevitably rather nervous before we started but James and Alex took such trouble and patience to help us relax and make us feel we could actually do it. The afternoon was magical as we paddled up the blissful Avon enjoying the river and our new found skill. Anne

A great couple of hours for my first paddle boarding experience, giving me confidence to build on for the future. The session was professionally delivered by James, and took place in a beautiful setting on the calm waters of the river Avon. It would have been helpful to know that you had to turn in at the farm shop ( did we miss this in the instructions?). The toilet and shower facilities were an excellent surprise. Thank you James and Alex I hope to join you again to check that I have remembered everything correctly.

Additional Information

1COVID19 Secure Audited
All our sessions will be socially distanced, hygienic and will adhere to government guidelines and advice from British Canoeing, the ASI and the Avon Navigation Trust as these evolve over time as well as meeting our own internal COVID19 risk assessment standards. We are ASI COVID19 Secure Audited.
2On-site facilities
Wittering SUP HQ is based at Arden Sailing Club where we have toilets, changing rooms, light refreshments, picnic tables and secure parking onsite.
3What is included?
Our sessions include all the gear you need to get on the water, we’ll kit you out with an adjustable paddle (we’ll adjust this to your height when you arrive). You’ll be learning on a beautiful 10’6” Sandbanks SUP Style Art Board. Safety leash and quick release waist belt on every board and buoyancy aids if required. There will be snacks and hydration along the way but bring your own water supply too.
4What should you wear?
Because we're going to be getting wetter than usual a wetsuit is a good idea, although not necessary in this water at this time of year. Flexible and comfortable are good. Barefoot is best. A towel and a change of clothes are a good idea, just in case ;)
5Feeling a little unsure?
New skills outside of our comfort zone can always seem a little daunting, but we are always SO much more capable than we think we are. We are passionate about making sure everybody feels safe, confident and happy with their experience; our approach is gentle, supportive and compassionate and you have nothing to worry about; we’ll look after you :)
6Refund & Cancellation Policy
We have to plan ahead and session spaces are limited so we offer a full refund if you notify us of your cancellation 2 weeks before your session or a 50% refund a week before your booked session (gift voucher sessions are non-refundable). We only operate under the safest conditions, as such if the weather (wind), or water (flow/flood) conditions are not appropriate for beginner’s lessons we will notify you and arrange a more suitable date for your experience.
